Our Approach
Every business
needs to take action to protect the environment. Avis is playing
its part.
Avis takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. We
are committed to measuring the impact that our business has on the
environment and taking steps to improve the situation. The largest
area of concern for us is the production of greenhouse gases. These
are generated from our offices, rental locations and vehicle fleet.
It's a big challenge. But we're not alone. We work closely with our
licensee partners to help them achieve the high environmental
standards we set ourselves.

Avis is a CarbonNeutral ® company. For every tonne of CO2
we produce, we pay for one tonne to be saved through
climate-friendly initiatives. This is known as carbon offsetting.
Over the past decade we have:
- Planted over 138 hectares of new woodland in 9 European
locations
- Part-financed a small-scale hydro power project in
Bulgaria
- Supported an agricultural methane capture project in
Germany
We're always on the look-out for the next initiative to
support and our investment in such schemes will grow as we
do.

CarbonNeutral ® Rentals
Customers can join in our drive towards a green world too by
offsetting their rental emissions from our dedicated on-line tool.
We also supply our customers and staff with environmental driving
codes so we can lower emissions by doing simple everyday
things.

Long-term commitment
Our commitment is for the long-term and carbon management is a
key part of our business strategy. We've been taking action since
2000 and are currently developing ways to minimise our impact and
mobilise our customers to help protect our world for future
generations. But then when it comes to the environment, as in every
area of our business, we try harder.

Practical steps to reduce our environmental impact
Steps we've taken include changing our fleets regularly to
ensure they operate as efficiently as possible and introducing more
environmentally-friendly vehicles in more locations. In 2007
they included Ford Flexi-fuel cars in France, LPG fuelled
Volkswagens in Italy, BMW 1 series with stop-start technology in
Spain, Honda Civic hybrids in Germany and Portugal and Toyota Prius
in the UK. And at our European HQ we continue to operate efficient
systems to minimise our CO2 emissions.

Managing Corporate Social Responsibility
Board level responsibility for CSR rests with the Group HR and
Corporate Affairs Director. In our corporately-owned operations,
CSR management and monitoring is assigned to local management.
Environmental champions were recently appointed in these countries
to drive forward our activity in these areas. For licensee
countries, Regional Licensee Directors are responsible for
promoting alignment with Group CSR principles and policies.
